Shining In All Fairness

It can be downright depressing if you stop and think about it if you peruse the world news. If the early blight doesn’t ruin the lovely tomato plants in your garden, then the late blight will. Loved ones and friends die prematurely from cancer – even young children. Fractured oil wells gush great gobs of goo – actually torrents of black crude – and no one seems to know how to stop it. Beautiful roses sport wicked sharp thorns. And as if to add insult to injury, a gigantic earthquake crumbles homes and businesses, killing and maiming. Far away, the tsunami surprises tourists and residents alike, sweeping them all away. Add to this chaotic scenario war, famine, political instability and you have ample reason to be depressed. No doubt about it. The news in our sin-sick world is depressing. It isn’t a pretty picture.

Life at the Cross

Though it does take mental discipline, let’s flip the coin and actively look for the good and the beautiful. Even though sin has horribly marred it, our world is still filled with stunning beauty, evidence of God’s creative power and majesty. Thus we can still find an island paradise, a towering magnificent waterfall, a quite beach, a tranquil forest trail, colorful coral reefs, mirror-smooth lakes, desert sunsets, broad ocean expanses, sun-dappled creeks, sweeping mountain vistas, lakeside parks, etc. When looking for “all that’s fair” these count. All these beauties, however, pale in comparison to the demonstration of Christ’s love on the cross.
